On Saturday, some friends of ours invited us to go to Harris Ranch for Steaks. I offered to drive, but Eric insisted on driving us. In a plane! Whoo hoo! Just kidding that’s not true. I never offered to drive.
It’s about 150 miles so driving would, well, be silly. Besides, it’d be tight with all four of us in the Corvette.
If you’ve ever driven from LA to the Bay Area and you drove past a ranch with about 10.2 bazillion cows stinking to high heaven then you’ve driven by Harris Ranch. The cows are all jammed together in a small space. It’s not pretty. You’d know it if you saw it. The restaurant is an exit south of the cows and they have a Inn, a couple of restaurants, and very short and narrow runway. At least according to Eric our pilot. I’ve actually heard of people doing this – flying in there and having steaks I mean. The steaks are supposed to be awesome. They were good steaks but not as good a Delmonico’s Steakhouse in Las Vegas (best Steak I’ve ever had). It was also a bit pricey (my steak was $37.00). That’s okay though it was a really fun evening and was worth every penny!
It was just under two hours round trip. Going up and down to cruising altitude, around 7000 feet, was a bit bumpy. Fun for a little bit actually, but then it was smooth sailing. We cruised at about 180 mph. The plane is very loud so we all had giant headphones with a microphone for talking. I sat in the co-pilot seat on the way up and Bunny sat in it on the way down. We each flew the plane for a minute or two. That was fun.
Eric has been flying planes since he was a teenager and made flying the plane look deceptively easy. The plane we went in was a rental. I don’t remember what kind of plane it was. Bad Mike. It was a four seater and it was white with a blue stripe… I sound like my mom describing a computer problem…
Anyway, Eric is finishing up a Fellowship at Stanford Hospital (where he met Bunny) in the next month or so and then he’s moving back home with his fiancée Susanne. We had a good time and while we’re happy for them, we’re bummed we didn’t get more time to hang out together before they moved home… :-p Eric promises to fly out and visit when he buys the plane he has his eye on… Can’t wait!
Anyway, here’s some pictures of the fun: http://www.pbase.com/michfull/harris_ranch. The pictures are password protected. The password is the name of my dog rover. Just kidding his name’s not rover.
P.S. Sorry if I didn’t spell Eric and/or Susanne correctly.

Rented plane eh? I really like how the seatbelt thingamagigy is duct taped to the ceiling (as seen here – http://www.pbase.com/image/29318333).
